taeggle

PRIVATE BETA

Privacy, in plain words.

The short version: your location is only used to open a taeggle, and it isn’t kept.

What taeggle is right now

taeggle is a private, non-commercial test project. It’s shared with a small circle of people to see whether the idea works. Things may change or break, and test data may be cleaned up.

Your location

taeggle only asks for your location after you tap “Find my taeggle”, and only so it can tell whether you’ve reached the taeggle.

  • While you’re searching, the distance is calculated in your browser.
  • When you look like you’ve arrived, your current position is sent once to our server so it can check you’re really there. It’s checked, then thrown away. It isn’t saved.
  • We don’t store a GPS route, a location history or where you walked.
  • If you open a taeggle with “I’m already there”, no position is sent at all.

What a taeggle stores

Each taeggle is saved in our database with:

  • the sender’s name and the message
  • an optional photo, GIF or voice note. Media is stored privately and is only delivered after the taeggle has been unlocked (or back to its sender). Photo uploads are re-encoded before storage, which removes embedded photo metadata such as EXIF/GPS data, and original filenames are not kept.
  • the taeggle’s location (the spot the sender chose) and its unlock radius
  • when it was created
  • whether and when it was found, and whether that was with GPS or without GPS verification
  • the emoji reaction, if one was given, and when
  • a short delivery note for the sender, e.g. “WhatsApp”, “Link”, the last 3 digits of a phone number or a masked email like “m•••@example.com”. Full phone numbers and email addresses are not saved.
  • a secret edit key, so only the sender can change or delete it

Senders can delete a taeggle any time in “My taeggles”. That removes it from the database and deletes its attached private media.

Beta usage events

To see whether the beta flow works, taeggle records simple steps like “taeggle opened”, “location allowed”, “location denied” or “unlocked”. Each step stores the event name, the taeggle it belongs to, the time and sometimes a small detail like the chosen radius or share channel. No positions, names or messages are stored in these events.

Photos, voice and contacts

If you choose a photo, it is resized and re-encoded in your browser before upload. If you record a voice note, microphone access is requested only after you tap “Voice”.

On supported phones, “Choose from contacts” uses the browser’s contact picker. You choose what the browser shares. taeggle does not upload or store your address book; the selected phone number or email is only used on your device to prepare the invitation. The existing masked delivery note described above may still be saved.

On your device

taeggle doesn’t set its own cookies. Your browser’s local storage keeps your name, the list of taeggles you’ve sent (with their edit keys) and which taeggles you’ve already opened, so things still work next time. You can remove this by clearing the site data in your browser.

Services involved

  • Vercel hosts the app. Like any web host, it processes your requests (including your IP address) to deliver the pages. The live app also includes Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page visits in aggregate without cookies.
  • Neon is the database that stores the taeggle data listed above.
  • Vercel Blob stores optional taeggle photos, GIFs and voice notes in a private media store. The app does not expose a public Blob URL for these files.
  • OpenStreetMap provides the map images, which your browser loads directly from their servers. When a sender uses place search, the search text is passed to OpenStreetMap’s search service.

What we don’t do

  • No advertising and no advertising profiles.
  • Your location is never sold or used for advertising.
  • No third-party tracking tools.
